The Western Hoser's Guide to Canadian Music
CALGARY, CANADA - Welcome to “The Western Hoser’s Guide to Canadian Music”! As a Canadian, I take pride in many things, including hockey, maple syrup, and Tim Hortons. However, when it comes to Canadian music, I must admit, I’m at a bit of a loss.
I know that Canada has produced some world-renowned musicians, like Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, and Drake, but beyond that, my knowledge of Canadian music is sorely lacking. To be honest, I’m not even sure if they count as “Canadian” anymore, considering how much time they spend in the United States.
Like many other Canadians, the only Canadian musicians I’m aware of live in the USA. Take Neil Young, for example. He’s an iconic figure in the music industry, and yet, I’m pretty sure he spends more time in California than he does in Canada.
Then there’s Shania Twain, who’s undoubtedly one of the most successful Canadian musicians of all time. But let’s be real, most people probably think she’s from Nashville.
So where does that leave us when it comes to Canadian music? Well, I did a little research and found out that there are some up-and-coming Canadian artists that are worth checking out.
There’s Daniel Caesar, a soulful singer-songwriter from Toronto whose music has been compared to Frank Ocean and Lauryn Hill. Or how about Jessie Reyez, an R&B singer from Toronto who’s collaborated with the likes of Eminem and Calvin Harris.
And then there’s The Weeknd, who I only recently found out is actually from Toronto. I had always assumed he was from America, but nope, he’s just a regular Canadian guy who happens to be incredibly talented.
In conclusion, while my knowledge of Canadian music may be limited, I am proud to say that our country has produced some truly exceptional artists. So the next time someone asks me about Canadian music, I’ll be sure to drop some knowledge on them, thanks to my research and newfound appreciation for our homegrown talent.
